James has just received an email from his friend inviting him to play the mobile image game. James receives it and is excited to begin to play. He opens the email and sees a message from his friend with a link on how to install and download the game. He clicks on the link and a web page opens. He sees instructions for downloading the game. He notes instructions for immediate installation to browse the page on his camera phone.

He launches his phone web browser to the suggested link. After connecting, he clicks on the download link. Before he continues, he makes sure he read and agrees to the privacy agreement that states that his photos and profile will be publicly accessible. After clicking “yes” the installation begins.

He launches the game, creates a user name and password for himself, and immediately sees a list of activities to complete. He’s excited about his new game, but sees his boss walking his way. He quickly turns off his phone and slips it in his pocket.

Scenario 2: James plays as a newbie.

  • Choose and Complete Ranking Activity

  • Choose and Complete Photo Challenge Activity

As James leaves work he ascends the stairs to the el, immediately after leaving his agency office, he turns his phone on, listens to his voice mail, and then immediately launches the mobile image game. After the game launches, the first thing he sees is his current list of activities, at first glance he sees the titles to a number of activities3:

    • Photo Challenge: Man with beard

    • Ranking: Baby on board

    • Verify: Legs

    • Photo Challenge: Train

    • Verify: Skipping

    • Photo Challenge: Walking dog

    • Ranking: Building

He realizes Train is in his list. He is interested in figuring out more, considering he is standing at State and Lake on the platform to the el. He clicks on train and sees a camera view with the Title Train. Just then the el begins to approach the station. James composes an image with the train as the main subject and clicks the shutter just as the train begins to slow down. He looks at the image and decides that he will save it as a valid candidate to complete this challenge. He boards the train.

He likes the ease with which he performed this activity. He returns to the main screen to investigate another activity. He selects Verify: Legs. He clicks on the item and sees the title of the image along with the associate image. He is intrigued that the image loads so quickly. It usually takes him at least 45 seconds to download an image onto his phone. He is happy and intrigued with the new game, as he wonders how the image got there so fast. He sees an image of a bucket of KFC legs. He chuckles out loud to himself and then clicks “Yes”4 to verify the KFC legs, do indeed fulfill the challenge.

Smiling widely, he returns to his lists of activities. He selects Ranking: Baby on board. He views the challenge and its description. Remembering how easy the Train was and yes how ambiguous “legs” was, he thinks that this challenge could be somewhat difficult. He ranks the challenge with a medium difficulty.

He returns again to the main menu to see if he can perform any other activities. He completes all other verification and ranking activities, and makes a mental note to be aware of “Man with beard” and “Walking Dogs”, so that he will be able to complete his list.

He still has 15 minutes left on his ride home. He opens his bag, grabs his book and continues where he left off.

Scenario 3: Karen browses photos looking for friends and joins a group

  • Browse Photos and Profiles

  • Join Group

A week after downloading and installing the game, Karen is thrilled with her new found fun. She has already joined the “Indiana Hoosiers Alumni” group her friend from friendster introduced her to. She has also posted a picture of her favorite place to buy Hoosier gear and her favorite bar to watch Hoosier games. She already is planning on trying a new recommended bar for the next game.

She has some downtime at work and is curious what other interest groups reside on the mobile image phone game. She begins by browsing the different groups available. She sees one called “Dress for Success”, remembering her motto she quickly chooses it. Upon entering the group she immediately sees photos of the last 5 photo challenges completed, along with member and moderator names. The moderator “Sergio_Isdahoe”, has completed the last photo taken on the last photo challenge and his name appears below this photo. She is surprised, however, as she scans the thumbnails of the completed photo challenges to realize that not only are the outfits all dresses but the individuals wearing the dresses also seem to be very masculine. As she peers closer at one photo, she quickly realized that through all the make-up, glitter, and bouffant hair is indeed a male. Realizing that this group may not be for her, she clicks back to continue browsing the groups.

She continues to scan the list and soon finds one entitlee “Chi-Omega”. As her sorority days flash nostalgically through her head, she clicks on the link. She immediately sees photos from various Chi-Omega events located at chapters around the nation. She surfs through the photos as her own memories come fleeting back. She wonders if anyone from the Indiana chapter is playing the game. She clicks on the members link and views individuals names and locations. To her disappointment no one is yet playing from Indiana. However, she does notice two members are from NYC. She clicks through to each of their personal profile pages and reads about their interests. She is excited about the prospect of meeting these girls and sharing in some fun with them. She immediately joins the group, by clicking the “JOIN” button and emails her new friends to say hello.

Scenario 5: Peter monitors progressand receives promotion

  • Accept/ Decline Promotion

For the last week, since they began playing the game, Chuck has been antagonizing Peter constantly, by reminding him of how many points he has accumulated, which is less than the number Chuck has. In agony, Peter is determined to beat Chuck. He has quietly brushed up on the rules, and realized that after proceeding to level two, he can then create and assign photo challenges. His strategy is to be the first of the two to assign photo challenges to the other, in that way he can be the first to send the other a photo challenge and surprise Chuck.

So everyday during his lunch period, Peter sets out to complete photo challenges. He monitors his progress continually both on the phone and on the PC, so that he can accurately gauge his status at the exact moment an activity has been completed and a photo challenge has been approved.

Today at lunch when he opens the game he sees that his reputation has reached almost 80% and he has gathered 99pts. He knows that he only needs one more point to be promoted, but that he also needs to raise his reputation to 85%. He views his reputation closer by clicking on the bar and sees his four areas of progress based on: photo challenge success average, ranking success average, and verification success average. He realizes that his weakness is in verification. He has really enjoyed the ranking and photo challenges but has given little time to verification activities. He knows that to improve his reputation he should become a balanced player.

He returns to the activity list and immediately completes all four verification activities which have been lingering in his list. He then returns to his office, nervous that he will be late for a meeting with his boss Marc.

After the meeting, he returns to his desk checks email and takes a quick glance at his reputation online. He sees his profile and activity list on the first page upon login into the system. To his anticipation his verification success average has jumped 10%, thus putting his overall reputation at 83%. He quickly completes another two verifications and one ranking. He thinks that should be enough to give him the boost up to the next level. He’s tempted to send Chuck an email, gloating his success, but he thinks he should wait to confirm his promotion and then send Chuck a special photo challenge.

Later that day, as Peter leaves work, he receives a SMS message congratulating him on his successful playing of the game. The message continues to say that if he would like to accept a promotion to level 2, to confirm the Promotion Activity currently residing in his list. He grins and goes to the game. Upon selecting the Promotion Activity, he is told that at this level of play he is granted the power to now create and assign his own photo challenges.

Smiling devilishly, he enters his home. “Hello, Chuck”….

John - Browsing Photos

1 (Note to self, I am starting to believe that John would care about the picture taking this less and less, and would be more of a lurker on the website. Taking pictures is a fairly invasive action, and doesn’t seem like something that someone would casually do (disrupt familiar strangers, daily routines). )

2 (NSG: Consumption, how does this play a part in what people are doing, or want to do with the system).

3 May not want to show names of all activities. May only want to call out names of photo challenges, depending on screen space.

4 May want to measure creativity for both completing and creating challenges. (IE through verifying and ranking).
