University of California BioText Group

|
Responsibilities:
Visual Design
Logo Design
Development
Challenge:
BioText at UC Berkeley, is a research group dedicated to improving
medical search databases applications, by using advanced algorithms
in natural language processing. My role was to create an online
presence and logo to brand this group.
Process:
Brainstorming sessions were held with all members in the group
to generate ideas about how to convey computer science's role
in biology in a way that reflected the groups' intentions. Many
low-fi mock-up implementations were initially made which were
discussed at group meetings. After many levels of iteration,
a final hi-fi version was completed.
Solution:
The solution includes a logo containing the university seal,
to imply sophistication and academic prestige. The group logo
was created to convey the medical and scientific nature of this
site, as the rest of the site design reflects biology, computer
science, and language -- the three main components of this group.
The coloring and layout give a sophisticated and natural feeling.

Cacciatore Harper Residential Properties
  |
Responsibilities:
Development
Challenge:
An outside graphic designer initially performed the visual design
and information flow. My responsibility was therefore to code
and develop the site, per the primary persona details, for fast
download times at home. This was a heavy consideration because
of the large amount of photographic content.
Solution:
Using DHTML and JavaScripting functions, a "dynamic slide show"
was created which would only be revealed once a property was
selected for further investigation. The slide show allowed thumbnail
images to quickly be viewed as larger images in an adjacently
positioned window. This method worked well considering the only
latency was performed at the initial download times per page
and was small since a limited number of photos were placed on
each page. To allow for meeting the specs of the primary persona,
the site also works with older versions of Netscape and IE.

Jilly's Cafe
|
Responsibilities:
Information Architecture
Visual Design
Development
Challenge:
A timeless look and feel was established for this well-known french restaurant by combining unique design with original photography.
Jilly's Cafe has an established clientele who have dined there for years. The challenge, was to bring them into the digital 21st century
while capturing both the delectable food quality and the timeless nature of this "north shore treasure".
Process:
An initial architecture was decided upon, based on the client's
business needs and user persona development. A production staff
brainstorming meeting was then held with the client to generate
ideas for a look and feel strategy for the site. While the
initial design prototype was performed, the photographer
captured Jilly's essence on film. Our work was brought together
and incorporated into initial prototype designs. Iterations
were made which resulted in production of a minimum color strategy
highlighting a refined simplicity and elegance.
Solution:
Using DHTML, CSS, and JavaScript functions, I coded the site
to work with older Netscape browsers and allow for easy home
access for Jilly's non-tech savvy primary persona. |
