{"id":95,"date":"2009-09-30T13:35:59","date_gmt":"2009-09-30T21:35:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/anitawilhelm.com\/2009\/09\/30\/transparency\/"},"modified":"2009-09-30T13:35:59","modified_gmt":"2009-09-30T21:35:59","slug":"transparency","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/anitawilhelm.com\/thoughts\/?p=95","title":{"rendered":"Transparency"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>So, it\u2019s been almost 1 year since heading to Berlin and in that last year, I have learned more than I could ever put in just one post.\u00a0 At the forefront, however, of those lessons is a word that has often come to my mind, while here\u2026 Transparency.<br \/>\n<br \/>\nAfter reading this report on the <a href=\"http:\/\/datasf.org\/showcase\/\">celebration of open collaboration<\/a> at a govt level.\u00a0 I was reminded of why I love California so very much!<br \/>\n<br \/>\nThere is something about the culture and community there that embraces so much change and innovation.\u00a0 And isn\u2019t afraid to open themselves up to transparency.\u00a0 Since coming to Berlin, I\u2019ve struggled often, with my work culture.\u00a0 For the last year, I\u2019ve been back at a 500 ton gorilla trying to get them to see some new light and it hasn\u2019t been easy!\u00a0 I realized quickly that I was possibly a little nuts to most people there, by the number of emails I am willing to send, the wiki\u2019s i\u2019m willing to post to daily, and the amount of conversations I am willing to engage in. \u00a0 And by \u201cwilling\u201d I mean, \u201cexpected\u201d.<br \/>\n<br \/>\nIt was just very different for me.\u00a0 I honor, celebrate, and thrive in transparent environments.\u00a0 I enjoy discussions and I enjoy San Francisco because it brings to me a playground for creativity and support for those who want to play.\u00a0 In the last year, I have gotten used to being blind about many decisions, feeling no autonomy in my work, and getting very quickly emotionally detached from anything I have been making.\u00a0 The result leaves me unsatisfied.<br \/>\n<br \/>\nI don\u2019t intend for this post to undermine the work that we have done nor my colleagues.\u00a0 I believe the work to be great and my colleagues even better.\u00a0 However, there is something very old to me about the culture at the 500 lbs gorilla and it runs deeper than I anticipated.\u00a0 Despite the efforts that we have made, I feel that much of the change needs to come from the very top and I\u2019m afraid that it will just take too long coming from the bottom, for me to be interested.\u00a0 I don\u2019t want to live in a world where folks tell me what to make.\u00a0 I don\u2019t want to live in a world where I tell someone else what to do.\u00a0 I want to live in a world where I respect my fellow employees so much, that I want to help them grow to become the best they can and I expect they will do the same for me.<br \/>\n<br \/>\nI want to live in a world where community and leaders, collaborate alike.\u00a0 I come from this environment and I guess, I just kind of expect it now.\u00a0 Transparency is powerful, enabling, and free.\u00a0 It\u2019s revealing of vulnerabilities and to those who don\u2019t want to work to change, once they are revealed, it\u2019s threatening.\u00a0 I understand that, but I don\u2019t want to be a part of those who feel threatened.\u00a0 I want to be a part of those who are willing to open up and create a better, freer world.<br \/>\n<br \/>\nI miss the culture of California.\u00a0 I feel blessed to understand it.\u00a0 In this spirit, I write this post, as I feel it\u2019s time for more transparency and change.<br \/>\n<br \/>\nAnita<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>So, it\u2019s been almost 1 year since heading to Berlin and in that last year, I have learned more than I could ever put in just one post.\u00a0 At the forefront, however, of those lessons is a word that has often come to my mind, while here\u2026 Transparency.
